Why the Urban Category of the Grammys Needs to Go! | How It Affects Black Artists

Rolling Stone recently published an article about the disparities in the music industry due to how music is labeled The Grammys announced they were removing the urban category. Starting with the 63rd annual ceremony, planned for January, best urban contemporary album will be called Best Progressive R&B album.

The Recording Academy called this change “a more accurate definition to describe the merit or characteristics” of R&B music.

The urban category has for the longest time been used as an euphemism for the term black music. Live Nation believe the term is necessary and does not agree with removing it.
