The Greatest American Artist You’ve Never Heard Of

Daniel Chester French, was he a great artist?

Born in 1850, he became one of the nation’s most celebrated sculptors. His iconic Minute Man statue, unveiled in 1875, stands proudly at the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts, commemorating the first battle of the American Revolutionary War. This farmer-turned-soldier captures the moment he steps away from his private life toward the impending battle, embodying the spirit of sacrifice and courage. But that’s just the beginning! He also did the Lincoln Memorial Statue.
