West Seattle Soul put an afro-soul twist on Manu Dibango’s pioneering afro-disco hit “Soul Makossa.” Their arrangement boasts bubbling clavinet, a tenacious horn section, and energetic vocal chants reminiscent of the original with a modern, underground dance music twist. The group has spent the last two years honing their chops at a residency at West Seattle’s Parliament Tavern, a small funk club where Quincy Jones and Ray Charles have been rumored to have scored their necessities.
