So much ‘Africa’ photography, so few African photographers

“Photography, Power, and the Ethics of Representation” is a three-part series of webinars conceptualised and convened by scholar and arts writer M. Neelika Jayawardane. The programme is a response to continuing inequalities in photography, especially the obstacles African and African diaspora photographers face. These dialogues between photography practitioners, photojournalists, artists, writers, and scholars aim to challenge and strategise against systemic practices of exclusion, build better educational tools, empower existing training programmes, and create stronger networks.

The programme of webinars took place between October 2020 and November 2021, in collaboration with the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre at the University of Johannesburg (VIAD), the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE), Artswego, and the Department of English and Creative Writing at SUNY-Oswego.

This series is not intended for commercial use or at for-profit/fee-based events. For screenings in classes, at symposia, or other educational events, please fill out the media form to request permission. [https://www.viad.co.za/photography-power-the-ethics-of-representationmedia-usage]
