Shining Light on Black & Mexican Artists | The Whitney’s Revolutionary Exhibition | NYC Museum of American Art Visit | Black In The Core
Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art
Want to see socially woke, revolutionary art that challenged everything before it? In this episode of Black in the Core we visit the Whitney Museum of American Art to see the exhibition “Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art”. Over 60 artists are featured in the exhibition. We’ll pay special attention to the Black artists included in the show and the Mexican artists who inspired them. These artists turned their focus toward the Black experience in America, the struggle for social justice, and the lives of everyday African Americans instead of following the European art movements of the time.
The episode examines the work of groundbreaking Black artists such Aaron Douglas, Charles White, Thelma Johnson Streat, Elizabeth Catlett, Archibald Motley, Hale Woodruff, and Jacob Lawrence, within the context of Mexican influence from Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jose Clemente Orozco, and Alfredo Ramos Martínez. Get ready for an incredible visual journey through the Mexican and African American art of the early 20th century!
Please note: A few works in the video were not part of this particular Whitney exhibition but were included to complete the story, such as the works by Thelma Johnson Streat shown at 10:31, “Naked Man with Knife” by Jackson Pollock, and “One: No.31” also by Pollock.
