The museum at Volunteer Park used to house the entire Seattle Art Museum with the Asian art collection just being one wing. When SAM moved to Downtown, the Volunteer Park building was devoted to the Asian collection alone. Seattle possesses one of the most important Asian art collections on the West coast, so the full museum building was put to good use. To my mind, the SAAM and surrounding park should be the top tourist attraction in Seattle – ahead of the Space Needle or Pike Place Market. SAAM reopened in early 2020 after an extensive renovation, but then had to promptly shut down again when the worldwide pandemic hit. During this visit in late 2021, the museum had reopened for limited hours with masking required.
