We lost another American/African-American Icon. Yolande Cornelia Nikki Giovanni, Jr. She was an amazing writer, poet, and activist who truly impacted a lot of people’s lives including mines. As a lot of you know, I went to the University of Illinois which is a PWI, Predominantly White School and during my time there I studied a lot of African American history. From the Autobiography of Malcolm X, to The Destruction of Black Civilization by Chancellor Williams, the list goes on and on. I also studied a lot of African American poetry like Sonia Sanchez, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and of course Nikki Giovanni who for me personally, always stood out the most. She was a major part of how I navigated through college and even in my life now. It’s a very sad day. We lost a Goddess of Words and light. And I want you to Rest In Power Queen!
Homework for you tonight, go watch the discussion between James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni on YouTube talking about the relationships between black men and women. It’s amazing!
