Lizzo Cast as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Upcoming Biopic ‘Rosetta’

Lizzo, the GRAMMY-winning artist, is set to make her lead acting debut as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the forthcoming biopic Rosetta. The Amazon MGM Studios project will explore a pivotal period in Tharpe’s life highlighting her groundbreaking contributions to rock and roll.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, often hailed as the “Godmother of Rock and Roll,” was a pioneering force who seamlessly blended gospel fervor with electric guitar mastery. Her unique sound laid the foundation for rock and roll, influencing icons such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Tharpe’s 2018 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame solidified her legacy, yet her story remains lesser-known to many—a narrative Rosetta aims to illuminate.

This role marks a significant milestone in Lizzo’s career, transitioning from her musical achievements to a prominent position in film. Her previous on-screen experience includes a supporting role in the 2019 film Hustlers.

The casting aligns seamlessly with Lizzo’s recent musical direction, as her latest singles exhibit a distinct rock influence. “Love in Real Life,” released in February, channels the funk-infused rock reminiscent of Prince’s Purple Rain era, showcasing her versatility and homage to rock’s rich heritage. Following this, “Still Bad,” unveiled in March, continues this trajectory with its rock-leaning sound, reinforcing her exploration into the genre.

Lizzo’s portrayal of Sister Rosetta Tharpe not only sets her up to expand her artistic repertoire but also serves as a tribute to a musical pioneer whose influence has profoundly shaped the evolution of rock and roll and deserves her flowers.
