In the season of gratitude, reflecting on and giving a soft nod to our beginnings is timely and dutiful. Just over a week from the EBONY Power 100 Gala, it felt right to deliver a hint of its history and the WHY behind Power and EBONY.
Beginning as the 100 Most Influential Black Americans list, comprised of those who have substantially affected various fields, including politics, religion, law and public service, to name a few categories. This list has evolved into a stunning gala that is not just to be read about, but also experienced in person, through video, photos and social media. Now referred to as the EBONY Power 100, the purpose and foundation are unmoved while shifts in culture and category are apparent.
In the vibrant world of Black excellence, few platforms have celebrated and uplifted our community’s achievements quite like EBONY Power 100. Since its inception in 1980, this iconic roster has been a source of inspiration, showcasing the brilliance and diversity of Black American accomplishments across various fields.
On the shoulders of those such as Thurgood Marshall, Sidney Poitier, Maya Angelou and many others, we are reminded of its magnanimous impact on Black culture and the broader societal narrative. We are reminded that this list began with our community in mind.
The outset of EBONY Power 100 can be traced back to the fertile and visionary minds of John H. Johnson, the founder of EBONY magazine, and his wife, Eunice Johnson, who is also credited with naming the publication. EBONY magazine was the flagship publication of Johnson Publications, the larger company that John H. Johnson himself started.
As Linda Johnson Rice, the former owner and daughter of the founders, fondly recalls, “The idea was to celebrate Black achievement across all areas and multiple disciplines.” With the execution led by legendary executive editor Lerone Bennett Jr., the list was born to inspire and enlighten Black Americans by showcasing the success stories of their peers, which, at that time, had often gone unacknowledged by mainstream media.
In those early days, editorial meetings were lively and filled with passionate discussions about who would make the cut. “It wasn’t an easy thing to do,” Rice admitted, “because there were so many great accomplishments [to be recognized].” Over time, the list evolved to include more women and even expanded to recognize the heads of various organizations, reflecting the growing diversity and influence within the community.
Fast-forward to 2012, EBONY Power 100 took on a new form, becoming a celebrated annual event. This evolution was about honoring the past and embracing the future. As Rice noted, “We have to keep moving forward and highlighting each other, lifting each other up.” The event has become a platform for celebrating the achievements of young Black leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators, inspiring the next generation to reach for the stars.
In today’s rapidly changing atmosphere, EBONY Power 100 has adapted to the ever-shifting landscape. Social media has become a powerful tool for magnifying voices and starting new ventures. Rice affirmed this shift: “You can start a business just based on social media, off of your followers and the products you present.” This expansion of opportunity has given rise to a new wave of Black entrepreneurs who are making their mark without the need for the traditional storefront.
Still, in the midst of this digital uprising, the baseline of the EBONY Power 100 remains unchanged. It continues to be a celebration of Black excellence, a testament to our community’s perseverance, dedication and sharpness. As Rice passionately stated, “We need to talk about our own successes and achievements more than ever now.”
The legacy of the EBONY Power 100 is not just about honoring the past but also shaping the future. It serves as a reminder that Black excellence is not confined to any era or discipline. From the arts to science, from business to activism, the honorees of EBONY Power 100 are trailblazers redefining what success means.
As we look to the future, EBONY Power 100 will continue to inspire and empower future generations. It is a celebration of our culture, achievements and potential. In the words of Linda Johnson Rice, “Please don’t stop because there are so many Black people every year that are doing incredible things that need to be highlighted, honored and respected.”
So, here’s to EBONY Power 100, a timeless tribute to the Black community’s power, resilience and genius. Thank you for providing the foundation and may it continue to illuminate our achievements and inspire us all to reach higher heights.
