As the holiday season brings warmth and togetherness, EBONY is excited to partner with Cricket to spread smiles by celebrating the inspiring journeys of HBCU student entrepreneurs. Our new “Pay Your Way” docu-series, Powered by Cricket, highlights the stories of ambitious students balancing academics while pursuing entrepreneurship, showing us what it means to build a legacy while paving your own path. As students in the Cricket Campus Ambassador Program, they are not only earning their degree but also leaving a lasting mark on their communities.
During our conversations with these bright young minds, alongside business consultant and series host Isis Bradford, we felt the warmth of their determination and learned a few invaluable lessons that every aspiring entrepreneur can carry into the new year and beyond.
Lesson I: The Power Is in the Details
Caleab Pickens, a junior Public Health major and fourth-generation Jackson State University student, beautifully illustrates that power lies in the details. An experienced event planner by trade, Pickens understands the importance of meticulous planning and being in tune with audience desires when organizing campus events as the Student Government Association president. “Every detail matters, from the location and decor to our music and activities. It’s about creating an experience that the students will love,” he explains.
He knows what many new business owners are beginning to discover: attention to detail can profoundly impact customer satisfaction and loyalty. Recent research shows that 70% of Americans are willing to spend more with a company that provides excellent customer service. Pickens’ approach to event planning reminds us that successful entrepreneurs should focus on logistics and crafting meaningful experiences that leave a lasting emotional connection.
By planning thoughtfully and delegating tasks effectively, Pickens’ approach demonstrates the importance of keeping a clear vision and aligning efforts with the needs of an audience. These principles are at the heart of creating successful outcomes, whether on campus or in business.
Lesson II: Consistent Learning Leads to Lasting Success
Desmond Washington, a senior English major at JSU, has nurtured his passion for hair styling since he was a little kid growing up in Crenshaw, Mississippi. His entrepreneurial journey kicked off in middle school when he turned his knack for braiding and wig styling into a thriving business that has helped him navigate college life.
In conversation with our host, Desmond mentioned his dedication to refining his craft by continuously learning new skills, which embodies the spirit of resilience that entrepreneurs can embrace during their seasons of growth. His commitment reflects an important truth in entrepreneurship: dedication and constant development lead to lasting rewards.
Being adaptable is key, especially in this fast-paced world of constantly evolving trends. His ability to respond to evolving trends in the beauty industry shows that success often comes from an ongoing commitment to improvement. In fact, many entrepreneurs find that continuous learning and development lead to greater fulfillment in their work.
Washington’s story is a shining example of how passion, persistence and the willingness to evolve are key ingredients to building a meaningful business.
Lesson III: Authenticity Is the Heart of Effective Personal Branding
Lastly, we had the delightful opportunity to chat about entrepreneurship with Sylvester Washington, a vibrant DJ and senior Geospatial Engineering major at Alcorn State University. Washington’s infectious energy sparkled when we asked about his long-term goals. “I want to be famous,” he beamed. For years, he’s been purposefully pursuing his dreams, crafting “DJ Sly,” a unique personal brand that resonates with his enthusiastic audience.
Washington knows the value of telling his brand story with intention. “I show up as myself, but I connect with my audience with my music and the energy I bring. When I’m on stage, I’m smiling, laughing and making sure people have a great time.” He has mastered the art of balancing his personal brand with who he truly is.
In today’s digital landscape, effective personal branding is vital for entrepreneurs aiming to shine in a crowded marketplace. The Harvard Business Review states it best: “professional and personal success depends on persuading others to recognize your value… outlining what makes you valuable—and giving people shortcuts for seeing what you have to offer—is critical to your success” (Avery & Greenwald, 2023). Washington’s journey highlights the power of authenticity paired with strategic planning and a clear vision to create a compelling brand identity.
