For EBONY’s October issue, which pays tribute to the cultural significance of HBCUs and the rich traditions surrounding homecoming season, stylist Alexander-Julian Gibbson created a look that embodies timeless collegiate style with a distinct Black flair. Known for being vibrant fashion shows in themselves, HBCU campuses have long been spaces where students find and embrace their style, making their mark on the cultural fabric of Black fashion. In this editorial feature, stylist Gibbson opens up about how his experiences at Howard University and Brian Tyree Henry’s alma mater, Morehouse College, influenced his approach to styling the Emmy-nominated actor.
“I drew inspiration from vintage imagery of Black collegiate style at HBCUs, particularly Howard University—where I studied—and Morehouse College, Brian’s alma mater,” Gibbson shared. “The aim was to highlight the often-overlooked influence of Black men in shaping preparatory fashion, showcasing their distinct sartorial voice through tailored blazers, varsity sweaters, and classic accessories.”
The styling for the October issue pays homage to the legacy of Black excellence with carefully selected pieces that evoke a sense of pride and tradition. Tailored blazers, signature varsity sweaters and timeless accessories transport us to a bygone era while also placing Black men at the forefront of preppy fashion’s roots—an influence that has long been underrepresented in mainstream style narratives.
Through this blend of vintage collegiate fashion and modern sensibilities, Gibbson captures both the elegance and cultural pride that defines HBCU style. His work underscores the enduring impact of Black men in fashion, bridging historical references with a contemporary vision to celebrate the spirit and history of HBCU campuses, where fashion continues to serve as a bold expression of individuality and community, especially during homecoming season.
