The Velvet Voice crooner is coming to OWN Network.
Luther: Never Too Much, the moving documentary chronicling the life of singer and Luther Vandross, will premiere on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network on Friday, February 7 at 9 pm, EBONY reveals exclusively.
The broadcast will include a special opening from Oprah Winfrey, who reflects on the singer’s impact on generations past and present.
Directed and executive produced by Dawn Porter, the critically acclaimed film, named after one of his most famous songs, chronicles Vandross’ personal life, showcasing his rise to fame through performance footage, testimonials and interviews with the late performer.
Starting with his early days in Harlem, Vandross’ ascendance to becoming king of the love song is traced from his formative days in the Apollo Theater house band and his early appearances on Sesame Street.
The documentary also delves into his personal battles, from struggling with his sexuality and weight to his ailing health after a devastating car accident in 1986.
“This documentary was one of the best I’ve ever seen! Luther Vandross’ music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” EBONY editorial director J’Nelle Agee declared.
“This film not only showcases what a magnificent songwriter he was but how he honed his craft while managing a number of personal challenges.”
Vandross tells his own story in the documentary alongside his closest friends and musical collaborators, which include Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Valerie Simpson and Roberta Flack.
“Celebrating the extraordinary talent and life of Luther Vandross, this documentary highlights an innovative trailblazer whose story exemplifies the powerful, inspiring narratives that OWN is dedicated to bringing to the forefront,” said Tina Perry, President of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
“We honor Luther’s impact on music and culture by sharing his legendary works and lasting influence, and we are excited for our audience to experience this heartfelt tribute to one of the greatest voices of our time.”
