Jonathan Majors is at a crossroads in his new film Magazine Dreams, which examines the pressures Black men face in their pursuit of respect and validation. It’s a theme the actor can fully relate to.
On March 25, 2023, the Lovecraft Country star was arrested for allegations of assault. He received two misdemeanors and served no jail time, but his career took a major hit. Magazine Dreams was dropped by its former company, Searchlight Pictures, and he was pulled from the Marvel lineup, where his portrayal of Kang in Loki and Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania was leading him to A-list stardom.
With much self-introspection, the actor quietly began to put his life back together. That included a new woman in his life, EBONY cover star Meagan Good. Last November, the two announced their engagement at the 2024 EBONY Power 100 Gala.
Magazine Dreams was picked up by Briarcliff Entertainment, and is finally making its way to screens on March 21.
Written and directed by Elijah Bynum, EBONY interviewed Bynum in February 2023, who shared this about the film’s premise:
“I wanted to paint a portrait of a life, specifically, a Black life not often depicted on-screen…A life that is complex and nuanced and speaks to sort of the vast spectrum of a Black experience.”
To play Maddox, Majors trained four hours and ate 6100 calories daily. It’s not the first time the actor has undergone such a grueling workout regimen to transform for a role. He spent 18 months training and following a strict diet to play boxer Damian Anderson in Creed III.
In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Michael B. Jordan, who starred with and directed Majors in Creed III, said he is more than open to working with the actor again.
That could be the opening that brings Majors back into the fold of his own success story.
