Where to Stay

Tucked amongst the maze-like pedestrian alleyways of the Vienna city center is Hotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper. I know, I know, that’s a mouthful. But trust me on this. A boutique hotel with only a handful of rooms and suites, this luxe property knows a thing or two about details and how they matter. And with it not being a massive accommodation, it leaves even more room for the staff to meet your every need.

The rooms have high ceilings that make your space feel extra grand. The bathrooms are outfitted in marble to further make you feel like the king or queen you are. There are even plush robes and slippers in your closet waiting to swaddle you into relaxation after a long day of exploring. Take advantage of the made-to-order breakfast menu prepared by the in-house chef each morning. Pro Tip: Go with a loaded egg scramble, a warm croissant and fresh-squeezed orange juice. You’re welcome.

Must-Eat Dishes

While most global cuisines are typically named for the country from which they exist—think French food, Ghanaian food, Korean food etc.—Viennese food is named after the city. Likely one of the few in the world, a huge part of that lies in the fact that Vienna is a made up of a melting pot of cultures that expatriated to the city over many decades.

During your visit, there are several staple dishes that you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss. For starters, the classic beef soup is something you cannot miss. It’s not overly complicated; it’s merely a boiled cut of meat served with a flavorful broth. The national dish of Austria is Tafelspitz, which is essentially boiled beef typically served with accompaniments like minced apples/applesauce and horseradish. Of course, you can’t travel there and not eat some form of schnitzel. The most popular is veal, and you have to pair it with Viennese potato salad. As for desserts, apple strudel, sachertorte (a rich chocolate cake with apricot jam) and kaiserschmarren (pancake-like pastries served with jam) are classics.

Best Things to Do

Another fun and important fact about Vienna is that you can find local vineyards within the city limits. Vino lovers, you’ll appreciate this. Spend a day hopping around to sip and savor at the wine taverns known as Heurige without having to go far. There’s even a cute little train that chugs through the area, making your adventure much more special.

For the history buffs, there are tons of museums that will excite you. One of the most famous is the Sigmund Freud Museum, located in an apartment once occupied by the popular psychoanalyst. There’s also an entire museum district as well. If you’re into the afterlife or want to get a glimpse of the larger-than-life tombstones of some of classical music’s most famous composers, check out the Vienna Central Cemetery. It’s literally an attraction in itself. Speaking of music, catch a show at any of the gorgeous theaters—after all, you’re in the home of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. Get dolled up and have a fun night on the town.

Other things to do: Book a baking class at Kruste and Krume to learn the art of traditional apple strudel, take a stroll and snap a few pics around Burggarten, try a cheese sausage from a street stand, book a table at Demel, which is the city’s most famous cafe and of course, do a bit a shopping within the city center. If you visit during the holiday season, be sure to pop into one of Vienna’s many Christmas markets. And, of course, this wouldn’t be an EBONY Escape without pointing you to some Black-owned businesses. Check out a list here.
