If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Doja Cat is giving it in spades. Since announcing the name of her upcoming album, Vie, the “Say So” singer has been giving us nuggets of what’s to come, and we’ve been eating it up.
The latest? A photoshoot by Jacob Webster, where the singer pays homage to none other than iconic artist Grace Jones. Doja’s got it all: the high fade top, the sharply structured black tuxedo jacket, the stare that bores into our very souls. Yep, it’s a picture that has garnered more than 1 million likes. Even those cheeky Bratz dolls commented, “Giving mother Grace Jones and we’re here for it.”
Tapping into the iconic imagery of celebrities’ past is nothing new. But it can become tricky when someone pulls out a look and then tries to claim it solely as their own. The key to making this a successful homage, as it has been since we started emulating the people we love, is to have a real love for the person you’re honoring and make sure those flowers flow correctly right back to the person who deserves them.
Playing off her upcoming album’s French-inspired title, Doja Cat captioned her “Tu es ma vie,” which roughly translates to “You are my life.” A little nod up to Ms. Jones’ 1977 hit “La Vie en Rose?” We certainly think so.
The homage has us skipping down memory lane. Here are a few others who have paid tribute to those who came before them by recreating their iconic looks.

For Halloween 2017, the Queen Bee showed her love for the Queen of Rap in several iconic outfits and got Lil Kim’s full approval.

Back in the day, Lil Wayne gave props to the cover of Jay-Z’s 1997 “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1” for his first “Tha Carter” album, which came out in 2004.
Supermodel Winnie Harlow got glittery to recreate the look Diana Ross slayed on her second cover album, Everything Is Everything, released in 1970.
