Imagine you’re sitting in the backseat cruising down Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas, the sun setting behind the skyline, but there’s no one in the driver’s seat. It’s almost like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie!
If you’ve taken to the streets of Austin recently, you may have seen the white luxury souped-up SUV navigating throughout the metropolis without a driver in sight. Uber and Waymo have teamed up to bring us the first wave of driverless rides, and it’s as exciting (and scary) as it sounds.
No need to pinch yourself; yes, the future has arrived and it’s very real. 2025 has crossed us into new territory via the first wave of driverless cars, and Austin is the lucky city to host this trailblazing driverless car experiment with its pretty views and agreeable roads. It’s a tech hub that will appreciate new developments in American culture like this.
Initially launching in early October 2023, this collaboration is not just a leap into the future; it’s a full-on teleportation. With the click of a button, open your Uber app–be sure you have the most up-to-date version and “Autonomous Vehicles” is turned on– and voila…you’ve got options! While passengers cannot be certain that a ride requested via Uber’s app in Austin will be fulfilled by a Waymo robotaxi, turning on that feature will increase the chances.
This collaboration between Uber and Waymo, a leader in robotaxi technology, which already offers self-driving car rides through its app in cities like Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco, is in part to expand Waymo’s reach and Uber’s popularity.

So, what does this mean for us, everyday people? First off…accessibility. Driverless cars have the potential to revolutionize transportation for those who have been underserved by traditional transit systems. Imagine a world where reliable, affordable rides are just a tap away, and no one scans your profile pic to make their final decision. It’s a new era of mobility, and it’s about time.
But hold up—before we get too hyped about being able to scroll at leisure while making your way to your destination, let’s address the elephant in the room: jobs. The rise of autonomous vehicles could mean fewer jobs for drivers, a profession that many in our community rely on. It’s a valid concern that needs to be addressed with empathy and vision.
As we come to grips with this new technology, it’s necessary to confirm that those affected are supported with opportunities for retraining and new career paths. After all, progress should be driving us all forward without leaving anyone behind.

Now, to safety, apparently, Waymo’s tech is top tier, with millions of miles of testing. But we all know that technology isn’t perfect. Fun fact my phone and computer have been spazzing out for weeks. Tech gods, help me!
But seriously, it’s crucial that these companies focus on being transparent, especially in areas where people might not fully trust technology. The public needs to see that these vehicles are not only safe but also fair in how they serve the public. Waymo so far has successfully steered clear of any major traffic accidents or safety issues that could make regulators reconsider permitting its driverless vehicles to operate.
Let’s take a deep breath, though; there is a fun factor. Imagine the possibilities for a night out with friends or a stress-free commute where you can catch up on your favorite podcast or even sneak in a quick nap. The convenience and uniqueness of driverless rides are undeniable, and we can all get excited about it.
So, let’s embrace the ride, advocate for equity and ensure that this technological revolution benefits everyone. After all, the future is here, and it’s time to take the wheel—or, in this case, let it take us. Next up for driverless rides is Atlanta in early 2025!
