Cissy Houston, Mother of Whitney Houston and Gospel Legend, Dead at 91

Cissy Houston, the mother of Whitney Houston and an accomplished vocalist in her own right, has passed away in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey, at the age of 91. Known as the mother of iconic singer Whitney Houston, Cissy’s influence extended beyond her familial ties, establishing herself as a respected artist in the world of R&B, soul and gospel. She graced the cover of EBONY’s May 1995 issue alongside her daughter Whitney and granddaughter Bobbi Kristina, a testament to her legacy within the music industry and her family’s profound impact. Newark, during Cissy’s rise, was a hub for musicians and creatives, and she was at the heart of that vibrant musical community.

Cissy’s career began in the late 1950s as a member of The Drinkard Singers, a gospel group composed of her siblings that laid the foundation for her musical journey. Throughout the 1960s, she was a member of The Sweet Inspirations, providing powerful harmonies for icons like Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. However, Cissy’s roots remained firmly planted in gospel music. She recorded numerous gospel albums, including “Presenting Cissy Houston” and “He Leadeth Me,” showcasing her exceptional vocal control and emotive delivery. Her work in gospel earned her Grammy recognition, highlighting her as not just a background singer but a formidable solo artist in the gospel world. Her voice, rich and soul-stirring, brought a spiritual depth that resonated with audiences and affirmed her as a cornerstone in gospel music.

Cissy also played a pivotal role in shaping her daughter Whitney’s legendary career. From nurturing Whitney’s talent in church choirs to guiding her through the intricacies of the industry, Cissy’s mentorship was foundational. Even as Whitney ascended to global superstardom, Cissy remained a steadfast source of support, particularly during Whitney’s battles with addiction. Her strength, faith and perseverance shone through as she stood by Whitney in both her triumphant and trying times, exemplifying a mother’s unconditional love.

Her solo career continued to flourish, blending her gospel roots with a soulful versatility that cemented her place in music history. From performing alongside Dionne Warwick to recording her own Grammy-winning albums, Cissy’s influence was profound and far-reaching. As a trailblazer from Newark and a devoted mother, Cissy Houston’s legacy is one of resilience, artistry, and a commitment to the power of music that transcends generations.

Cissy is preceded in death by her husband, John Houston Jr., her daughter, Whitney Houston, and granddaughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown.
