Challenges of Modern Poets and Writers with Isaac Bashevis Singer (1971)
Polish American writer and essayist Isaac Bashevis Singer reads a short story and speaks about “challenges of modern poets and writers.” This event was co-produced by the 92nd Street Y and The Workmen’s Circle (now known as The Workers Circle). Singer reads “The Beard,” a story about Yiddish writers in New York. “The Beard” was unpublished at the time of this recording but was later published as part of the collection A Crown of Feathers and Other Stories (1974). Following the reading, Singer shares a speech he wrote for an event in Tel Aviv, “Literature and the Supernatural.” The speech explores the competing influences of “logic and mysticism” in contemporary literature. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
Recorded December 6, 1971 at 92nd Street Y, New York.
