Some music announcements feel almost unreal until you can stream the tracks or hold a physical copy in your hands. That sentiment perfectly describes SOS Deluxe: LANA, the extended reissue of SZA’s blockbuster 2022 album, SOS. Initially teased around the time of the original album’s release two years ago, the expanded edition is now available for streaming and digital download. Featuring a staggering 15 additional tracks, which brings the total to a hefty 38 songs, the collection further solidifies SZA’s signature blend of alt-indie-tinged R&B.
SZA announced the release date with an Instagram post featuring actor Ben Stiller singing along in his car to a new track aptly titled “Drive.” She also used the moment to plug the return of Stiller’s directed Apple TV+ show, Succession, which she is a vocal fan of.
After fans were teased with various album cover concepts over the past year, the deluxe edition officially dropped on the afternoon of December 20, following some mixing and DSP upload delays. The album opens with “No More Hiding,” a poignant track where SZA bares her desire to embrace vulnerability, even if it comes at a cost. “No more hiding / I wanna feel sun on my skin / Even if it burns or blinds me / I wanna be purified within,” she sings.
Another standout is “30 for 30,” a duet with her former TDE labelmate and frequent collaborator Kendrick Lamar. The track arrives ahead of their upcoming joint Grand National Tour, which will hit stadiums across North America. The two also collaborated on Lamar’s recent album, GNX, contributing to the tracks “Luther” and “Gloria.” Other collaborators come in the form of producers featuring Lil Yachty and Benny Blanco.
SZA’s standard SOS, released in December 2022, achieved remarkable success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and spending ten non-consecutive weeks atop the chart—the longest for a female artist in the decade at that time. The album broke the record for the largest streaming week for an R&B album in the U.S. The single “Kill Bill” became SZA’s first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
At the 2024 GRAMMY Awards, SOS earned SZA nine nominations, the most for any artist that year, and secured wins, including Best Progressive R&B Album. The album’s enduring popularity is further evidenced by its record-breaking 41 weeks at number one on the R&B/Hip Hop chart. This success confirms SZA’s significant impact on the music industry, blending critical acclaim with commercial triumph.
