Beyoncé continues her Grammy reign with a record-breaking 11 nominations for her genre-blending country album, Cowboy Carter. The multi-talented superstar is up for Album, Song and Record of the Year for Cowboy Carter and “Texas Hold ‘Em,” marking her fourth consecutive Album of the Year nod and fifth overall. This year, she surpasses Jay-Z as the most nominated artist in Grammy history, with a staggering 99 career nominations. In addition, Beyoncé’s single “Bodyguard” is up for Best Pop Solo Performance, while her collaboration with Shaboozey and Linda Martell on “Spaghetti” earns a Best Melodic Rap Performance nomination. This also marks Martell’s first career nomination.
After facing a turbulent awards season in country music—with no wins from 12 nominations at the People’s Choice Country Awards and a complete snub from the CMAs—Beyoncé has found strong support from the Grammys, with nods for Best Country Album and Song. Her single “Bodyguard” is up for Best Pop Solo Performance, while her collaboration with Shaboozey and Linda Martell scored a Best Melodic Rap Performance nod. With Cowboy Carter and “Texas Hold ‘Em” vying for Best Country Album and Song, it remains to be seen if the Grammy committee, which shares voters with other country music award bodies, will validate her crossover success.
Kendrick Lamar earned five nominations for his impactful single “Not Like Us” and his feature on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” Rising star and EBONY Power 100 honoree Doechii shined with a Best New Artist nomination and three additional nods, while Shaboozey landed six nominations, including Best New Artist and accolades for his record-breaking single “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” EBONY Power 100 honorees SZA, Coco Jones, Durand Bernarr and Latto also secured nominations across R&B and hip-hop categories.
This year’s Album of the Year race is especially competitive, featuring André 3000’s instrumental debut New Blue Sun, which has garnered unexpected support from hip-hop voters. Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter leads the charge, while Charli XCX’s BRAT, Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department round out the field after successful commercial and critical runs.
Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” lands both Song and Record of the Year nominations, and he continues his dominance in the rap categories. In Best Rap Album, Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal and GloRilla’s Yeah Glo! are among the frontrunners, with both artists also competing in Best Rap Performance.
Metro Boomin and Future’s We Don’t Trust You album—infamously igniting the Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud this year—has multiple nominations, including Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Album. Surprisingly, Metro Boomin didn’t land a Producer of the Year nomination, a notable oversight given his high-profile year.
The Best African Music Performance category showcases Nigeria’s dominance, with Burna Boy and Asake leading the field. Burna Boy’s “Higher” and Asake’s collaboration with Wizkid on “MMS” both earn nods. Davido returns to the category for his work on Chris Brown’s “Sensational,” with Lojay scoring his first nomination for the same track. Yemi Alade and Tems round out the nominees, with Alade’s “Tomorrow” and Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” each vying for a win.
Some surprises are notable this year. Sexyy Red, who won Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist at the BET Hip Hop Awards, was passed over for a Best New Artist nod despite her recent BET acclaim.
Other highlights include EBONY Power 100 honorees Coco Jones and SZA’s nominations for Best R&B Song, joined by Kehlani, Tems and Muni Long. EBONY Power 100 performer Durand Bernarr also scored a Best Progressive R&B Album nod for his acclaimed EP En Route.
The second round of Grammy voting begins December 12, 2024, and closes on January 3, 2025. The 67th Grammy Awards will air live from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 2, 2025, on CBS and Paramount+.
