“‘Libby and D-Lee’ is a representation of friendship, Black joy, happiness, and love.”
– Larry Ossei-Mensah
In the third video of our ‘Anatomy of An Artwork’ series with Larry Ossei-Mensah, exhibition curator of “Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks” at SAM, gives us an up-close look at the 2019 portrait “Libby and D-Lee.” The subjects of the painting are Boafo’s close friends whom he met while living and working in Vienna, Austria. Unlike most of his other portraits, Boafo opted to paint Libby and D-Lee with their eyes closed. Rather than demanding attention through their gazes, explains Larry, the subjects are consumed by their moment of joy and invite viewers to share in their experience. “Soul of Black Folks” closes Sunday, September 10—get your tickets to see it at SAM before it’s too late!
