Born into a middle class black #Philadelphia family, #MetaFuller studied #sculpture at the #PennsylvaniaMuseumandSchoolofIndustrialArt until 1899. Showing great talent, Fuller applied to continue her studies in France and stay at #TheGirlsArtClub where she was unwelcome when they found out that she was #AfricanAmerican . Not letting their #racism get her down, she built out her own artistic network, was awarded a solo #galleryshow , and eventually studied under #AugustRodin who believed her to be “a born #sculptor .” In 1907 she was the first artist to be commissioned by the U.S. government to do a series of dioramas on the history of African Americans winning her a gold medal. Fuller lived to age ninety-one and will be remembered as one of America’s most important sculptors, female sculptors and painters as well as African American artists.
