In 1839, #RobertDuncanson , one of five son’s of a black free man, apprenticed under his father in their house #painting business. Robert showed more skilled than his brothers inspiring him to move to Ohio to pursue a career in fine arts at nineteen. Cincinnati had a thriving art scene and one of the largest #AfricanAmerican populations in the US. Not able to take classes at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts due to his skin color, he spent countless hours copying prints of well known artists. Again proving his skill, #Duncanson gained support from wealthy #abolitionist patrons, first in #portraiture , then genre painting and finally #landscape. His #HudsonRiver school style work was so exceptional that it traveled the world and showed at the Academy that he was unable to attend, making him one of the first internationally known African-American artists.
