A$AP Rocky has been acquitted of two felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, closing a high-profile case stemming from a 2021 shooting incident in Los Angeles involving a former friend.
The verdict, delivered Tuesday (Feb. 18) by a California jury, marks a legal victory for the rapper, who faced up to 24 years in prison had he been convicted. His attorneys argued that the weapon in question was a prop gun loaded with blanks, emphasizing that no real bullets were fired. Rocky, born Rakim Athelston Mayers, did not take the stand during the trial.

Rihanna, his longtime partner and the mother of their two children was present in the courtroom when the decision was read. Following his acquittal, Rocky expressed gratitude to the jury, telling reporters, “Thank y’all for saving my life.”
The trial’s proceedings captured widespread attention, with the courtroom serving as a backdrop for moments of both tension and unwavering support. Rihanna, accompanied by their sons—2-year-old RZA and 1-year-old Riot—stood by Rocky’s side throughout. In a heartfelt Instagram Story shared with her 150 million followers, the singer wrote, “THE GLORY BELONGS TO GOD AND GOD ALONE. THANKFUL, HUMBLED BY HIS MERCY!”
Rocky’s legal team maintained that the firearm was acquired from a music video set and was carried for security purposes. His decision to reject a plea deal proved pivotal, as he ultimately walked away from the case with his freedom intact.
The verdict ends a nearly three-year legal battle for the Harlem native, reaffirming his place as not just a rap star but a cultural fixture whose influence extends beyond music and fashion. The rapper is set to release his next studio album, Don’t Be Dumb.
