Durand Bernarr Discusses ‘BLOOM’ and the Art of Staying True to Oneself

Durand Bernarr’s new album, BLOOM, marks a bold evolution in his ever-expanding musical journey. Fresh off a GRAMMY nomination for his EP “En Route” in Best Progressive R&B, the EBONY Power 100 2024 performer is ready to push boundaries with a project that blends his signature sound with new, adventurous elements. “We were moving so fast in the year… so that was just a pleasant surprise considering we had five days to put the project together,” he recalls, highlighting the rapid, creative energy that has fueled his work.

Collaborating with industry stalwarts like Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony, he emphasizes the value of partnership: “I don’t want to write or record another song again, and I don’t have someone there to bounce ideas off of.”

As a prolific creator, Bernarr acknowledges the importance of collaboration in evolving his sound. He notes, “I’ve had enough time to myself to do things explicitly the way that I want… I know that I can’t do it by myself. I don’t want to do it by myself.” This openness to external influences has sparked his interest in exploring new genres, including a rock album: “There are just certain things that I want to say and express that can’t be said in a sweet manner.”

His latest album, BLOOM, serves as a testament to his growth and versatility. Balancing familiar sounds with innovative elements, Bernarr aims to take listeners on a journey: “I’m not trying to do necessarily better. I’m just trying to figure out, well, what things have I not discussed.” Tracks like “Generous” delve into themes of love and resilience, with Bernarr sharing insights on maintaining positivity: “It’s easier for me to just be myself, be warm, be kind. It’s also learning boundaries.”

BLOOM is designed to give each track room to breathe, bucking the trend of short, stream-friendly songs. “I didn’t want to do any more songs that were under five minutes… I’m going to take you somewhere,” he asserts, promising an immersive, cinematic auditory experience that invites listeners on a journey of deep emotion and expansive soundscapes.

Visual storytelling remains integral to Bernarr’s artistry. While En Route was a visual EP, BLOOM offers a cinematic auditory experience, with potential for future visual companions: “I feel there will be a bit more time allotted to this project because I feel like it’s such a moment.”

Reflecting on his evolution from a production assistant for Earth, Wind & Fire nearly two decades ago to a celebrated artist, Bernarr offers sound advice–yet comical–to his younger self: “Save money.” His journey exemplifies dedication, adaptability and an unwavering commitment to authentic expression.
