Yamanaka & Co, an art dealership of Osaka, Japan, opened the first store in New York in 1894. Several decades later, Yamanaka became one of the most successful Asian art dealers in the West, with prestigious stores in New York, Boston, Chicago, and London. Yamanaka’s rise was synonymous with growing interest in Asian art in the US. Many collectors and museums, including the Seattle Art Museum, built up their core Asian collections around this time. But at the start of World War II, all of Yamanaka’s assets were confiscated by the US government and sold off. Global geopolitics transformed the landscape of the international art scene.
