Phillis Wheatley (1753–1784) – First Published African American Poet.
Phillis Wheatley was the first African American to publish a book of poetry. Her collection, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (1773), gained international acclaim. Enslaved as a child, Wheatley’s work showcased her intellect and challenged racist notions about the capabilities of Black people.
