#BlackNativity – Last Thursday, our Trae Holiday attended the opening night of Black Nativity presented by the Intiman Theater at the Broadway Performance Hall. After a decade-long hiatus, the return of Black Nativity has been one of the most highly anticipated productions this holiday season in Seattle’s Black community and beyond. The musical written by Langston Hughes was a tradition in the Emerald City for years and was anchored by the late Pat Wright, who was the founder of the Total Experience Gospel Choir, as well as the late Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney, who was the pastor at Seattle’s Mout Zion Baptist Church for 40 years.
Black Nativity is back with a bang, directed by Valerie Curtis-Newton, with musical direction headed up by Sam Townsend and choreography by Vania C. Bynum. Black Nativity brings back all the comforts of old, especially for those out there who grew up in the Black church, as the music and dance keep the theater rocking all around a timeless story of the nativity.
Black Nativity features a cast that includes Shaunyce Omar, Esther Okech, Yusef Seevers, and Jarron A. Williams, and a 15-member choir backs them.
Intiman Theater teamed up with The Hansberry Project, a professional black theatre company dedicated to the artistic exploration of African-American life, history and culture as their producing partner for Black Nativity.
Black Nativity is a must-see and is playing at the Broadway Performance Hall in Seattle from now until December 30th.
