Interscope Launches HBCU Initiative with Homecoming Pop-Ups, Exclusive Vinyl and Mentorship

Interscope Geffen A&M Records has unveiled a groundbreaking yearlong initiative to deepen its relationship with HBCUs, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping culture and cultivating music executives. As the music industry invests in developing the next generation of Black music executives, Interscope’s new program marks a significant step toward that goal. 

Set to launch this fall, the initiative’s first phase will bring Interscope Records to three iconic HBCU campuses—Howard University, Tennessee State University, and Texas Southern University—during Homecoming Week. Each campus will host immersive, student-led pop-ups where attendees can experience Homecoming SZN Vol. 1, a vinyl-only compilation album available for purchase via Interscope. The album, blending modern classics like Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and GloRilla’s “TGIF,” celebrates the spirit of HBCU Homecoming and includes two surprise tracks from rising Interscope artists. 

Custom vinyl artwork has been created for each university, and a consumer edition will be available at select retailers. In addition to the music, these pop-up activations offer students the chance to win concert tickets, capture moments at a photo booth, and shop exclusive merchandise provided by Champion sportswear, featuring crewnecks and t-shirts designed for each school. Renowned Black multidisciplinary designer Laci Jordan was tapped to create the original vinyl artwork and design the accompanying merchandise. 

Interscope’s commitment goes beyond homecoming pop-ups. The label will donate $3 from every item sold to the respective university, with funds supporting HBCU-specific scholarship offerings for prospective interns and mentors. Additionally, Interscope/UMG will establish fellowships that connect HBCU undergrads with alumni employees, fostering direct pathways into the music industry.

We want to deepen our ties with HBCUs nationwide and are excited to embark on this year-long journey.”    

Additional activations are planned through 2025, with plans to expand the initiative to more HBCUs in the future.
