Seattle’s jazz scene attracted big out of town performers like Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, and Duke Ellington, but a mainstay of the local scene was Frank Waldron, a lesser-known musician whose work in Seattle had a long-lasting impact. He taught trumpet at his studio near Rainier and Boren to students like Quincy Jones and Buddy Catlett, and was part of the WhangDoodle Orchestra, the first Black music group to be allowed to play in downtown Seattle for white audiences.
